Choose the right type of policy
There are two types of breakdown cover you can choose from:
Vehicle cover: This means only your vehicle will be covered, so you can only call out for assistance when the covered car breaks down.
Personal cover: This means you will be covered in any car you travel in, whether you are driving or a passenger.
If you only ever travel in your own car, a vehicle cover policy can give you the cover you need and may work out cheaper.
However, if you regularly use different cars, a personal cover policy gives you better protection.
Before you begin comparing breakdown cover
Its super simple to compare your breakdown cover options. We just need an idea of how old your vehicle is and some basic details about you.
If you’ve just bought a new car, you may want to check whether your dealership included any breakdown cover. If you get cover included, it’s worth checking the level and make sure you have everything you may need such as cover in the EU.
What type of breakdown cover is right for me?
Having the right breakdown cover can get you out of trouble and save you money. Here is how to find out what breakdown policy is right for you.
There are five main levels of breakdown cover. They can be bought separately but tend to be bundled together.
Roadside assistance : This type of policy could be the best option if you do not drive long distances, or if you only drive every now and again. You will not be covered if your car breaks down at home, or within a certain distance, for example a quarter of a mile.
If you are on a tight budget, roadside assistance will give you cover at the cheapest price.
Roadside assistance is included in any breakdown policy, but if you want more cover you can choose to add further options.
Roadside recovery : This cover is the same as roadside assistance, but you get to pick the destination you’re taken to, anywhere in the UK.
Onward travel : This includes a means of continuing your journey. For example, some policies provide a replacement car while yours is at the garage, some offer reimbursement of public transport costs, and some even cover a night’s accommodation and medical assistance.
At home : Home start is usually offered as an add on to a policy, or as a feature of a comprehensive breakdown package that includes all the available benefits. This type of cover is useful if you own an unreliable car that might not start, or if you live far away from a garage.
EU cover : This policy tends to include all of the other levels of cover, but is also applicable while you’re abroad in the EU. Specific details will vary from policy to policy though, so be sure to check you’ve got all the information.
It’s also worth remembering that all of these policies can be tied to you, no matter what car you drive (known as ‘personal cover’), or tied to a vehicle, no matter who drives it (known as ‘vehicle cover’).
Do I need breakdown cover?
If you regularly travel but don’t have a boot full of jump leads, spanners and spare parts, breakdown insurance could really get you out of a jam should mechanical problems strike.
How many times can I claim on my breakdown cover?
It depends on your provider and the level of cover. Some offer unlimited call outs, but a basic policy may only let you make one claim a year.
Am I covered in someone else’s car?
Yes, if you choose a personal cover policy, you will be covered whether you are driving or a passenger in any car.
Can I pay for breakdown cover monthly?
Yes, you can either pay for your cover in one upfront payment, or you can spread it over the term of the policy.
Can I earn a no claims discount?
Yes, some providers offer a discount if you do not claim on your policy in the previous year. Not all offer this so check with them before you buy a policy.
Am I covered for business use?
Breakdown providers do not generally ask whether your vehicle is intended for business use, but read your policy to check for exclusions and if you have a large number of vehicles you may want to consider fleet cover.
