How to get cheap car insurance

While there are many factors you can’t control when it comes to the cost of cover, there are some simple measures you can take to keep the cost down in your search for very cheap car insurance, including:

  • Paying a higher voluntary excess (the extra amount you’d pay in the event of a claim)
  • Limiting who drives your car to just yourself, or you plus a named driver
  • Parking your car in a garage or driveway away from the street
  • Keeping your mileage low (doing less than the average of 8,000 miles per year according to the National Travel Survey)
  • Fitting a security device such as an alarm, tracker, or immobiliser

What car insurance cover should you get?

There are three types of car insurance policy to choose from: third party only; third party, fire and theft; and comprehensive.

Comprehensive – as the name suggests, this includes all the cover of a third party fire and theft policy, but could also protect you as a driver and may pay out for damage to your car. It could also include compensation for a number of things such as: medical treatment, legal expenses and accidental damage.

Third party, fire and theft – this covers the cost of damage or injury to third parties but it could also give you compensation if your car is damaged due to fire or theft or if it is stolen.

Third party only – this is the minimum level of cover you need to drive on UK roads. It only covers the cost of compensating other people for injury or damage caused by you. It doesn’t provide you with any financial help for injury or repairs to your vehicle.

It’s also worth knowing that the typical car insurance policy lasts for 12 months and will need to be renewed each year. Your insurance might automatically renew when it’s about to expire.

Can I drive a car without insurance?

No, it is a legal requirement to have at least third party car insurance cover to drive in the UK.

What does car insurance cover?

It can cover damage to your and another driver’s car after an accident. It can also cover theft, vandalism and fire.

Is it cheaper to pay annually or monthly?

Paying annually in one go will usually work out cheaper because you will be charged interest of up to 30% when you pay monthly.

Should I let my policy automatically renew?

No, your current provider will not usually offer the cheapest deal so shop around and find a new policy instead of renewing.

Can I get insurance for an imported car?

Yes, you can use our quote service to find cheap cover for your imported car. You can select whether your car is a grey or parallel import.

Can I check if a car is already insured?

Yes, you can check if a car has a valid insurance policy in place through the Motor Insurance Database (MID).

How long does car insurance last?

Most car insurance policies last one year, but you can cancel your cover for a fee. You can get short term cover for between one day and three months.

Can I drive other cars?

If you have a fully comprehensive policy you might be covered to drive other people’s cars, but some polices do not allow this.

Can I switch my policy to another car?

Yes, if you buy a new car you will need to tell your insurer so they can update your policy. The cost of your cover will probably change.
